Overview

Jamaica lies in the heart of the Caribbean sea, tempting visitors to forget everything for a while along its 1022km white sand coastline and under its sun rays. Despite its central location, Jamaica is truly an island apart from the others in the Caribbean archipelago, boasting a fascinating, unique character all of its own. Discerning travellers will enjoy unravelling the island’s history and individual culture.

The third-largest island in the Greater Antilles is renowned as the birthplace of Bob Marley and has become the adopted home of the Rasta. Reggae, rice-and-peas, rum, sumptuous Blue Mountain coffee and cricket are the closest things to the island’s heart. Oral traditions are also strong, and putting the world to rights over a game of dominoes on a veranda is a favourite local pastime.

Negril and Montego Bay are Jamaica’s two main coastal resorts. A wide variety of tourists are attracted by their beautiful beaches, lively bars, refined restaurants and world-class golf. Negril, with its 11km beach and colourful beach bars, is the more laid back town. Mo’ Bay is favoured by those who like to party and shop.

Authentic Jamaica lies a short journey along the coast. A bit of exploring will turn up street markets selling ackee, yam, breadfruit and kulu kulu rum and the sleepy, traditional fishing villages of Treasure Beach, Port Antonio and Oracabessa.

No visit to Jamaica is complete without a trip to the capital: Kingston. Jamaica’s, history, beauty and musical roots combine here in a pulsing, city environment. Look out for grand Georgian plazas and mansions, soca rhythms and the Bob Marley museum.

Accommodation on the island is also varied with almost 150 hotels and guest houses or you can opt for upmarket villas with a private pool and staff at hand to cater for your every need.

Whichever option sparks your imagination, Inspirational Travel will be delighted to tailor-make your ideal Jamaican holiday.
