Rocktail Bay Lodge
Key Facts
Overview
Situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal, in the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve and offering perhaps the best beach-wilderness experience in South Africa, Rocktail Bay Lodge can only be described as a secluded haven for adventure seekers and sun worshippers alike.
Located only metres from the Indian Ocean, in the coastal forest just behind the dunes, the lodge accommodation consists of ten rustic wood and thatch ‘tree house’ chalets raised up on stilts into the forest canopy. Each Chalet has private shower and toilet facilities and a wooden sun deck. There is a lounge/bar and dining area where meals are served under thatch or beneath giant mahogany trees.
Guests can relax at the swimming pool at the lodge or walk to the beach via the intricate boardwalk through the dune forest. Activities such as snorkelling, surf-fishing and, in the summer, fascinating nocturnal explorations for egg-laying sea turtles are possible. Nature walks through the forest and grasslands or drives in open 4-wheel drive vehicles to Black Rock will enthral naturalists and photographers.
The area boasts its own ‘Big Five’ – leatherback turtle, palmnut vulture, Buitons skunk, lion fish and Zululand cycad. Whales and dolphins are sometimes seen offshore. Birding is good and a number of typical coastal species are present.
