Old Mondoro Bush Camp
Key Facts
Overview
Towards the eastern side of the Lower Zambezi National Park, in a wonderfully open area of faidherbia forest, Old Mondoro Bush Camp, is a far simpler affair than its sister camp, Chiawa. Here glowing paraffin lamps replace electricity, steaming bucket showers are made to order and the four delightful en-suite chalets are of local pole and thatch construction. Yet like Chiawa, only forty minutes west by boat, guiding levels, activity choice, service and excellent home-cooking remain trademarks.
The comfortable rooms are strung out along a hippo-friendly channel off the Zambezi, enjoying great views with their half-height walls and small decks.
Activities at Old Mondoro focus on game drives and boating, though the elephant and hippo activity around camp are enough to encourage a lodge-based safari!
Tasty meals are served fireside or in the open-sided thatched dining room, and star-gazing in this remote spot makes a perfect pastime.
The simplicity and size of the camp leads to a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and as an antidote to the pressure and pace of modern city life, you couldn’t ask for a better retreat.
