Nkwichi Lodge
Key Facts
Overview
No roads in, none going out. At Nkwichi Lodge seclusion is simply an understatement. Recently voted as number one for Responsible Tourism, Nkwichi Lodge, brought to you by the Manda Wilderness Community Trust, has made the best paragon for a sustainable tourism environment and what you do here improves the lives of many others.
The Lodge is hidden on the dazzling Mozambique shores of Lake Niassa fronted by beautiful white sands that are lapped by crystal clear waters that teem with tropical fish. The lodge was built totally by hand and consists of only six chalets (including one family chalet and one honeymoon chalet) and two private houses, with mod-cons very few and far between. Nkwichi is a place for the traveller who longs for a true wilderness experience where time stands still. Guests can get in touch with nature whilst still enjoying a peaceful and relaxing stay, with the service & staff forever being the charm of Africa.
Each of the chalets are unique and private and inside you will find four poster beds made from old tree trunks, giant baths that have been hewn from boulders and showers crafted into hanging trees. Each also has a private verandah with carved armchairs and hammocks, where you can laze and escape the midday sun whilst being caressed by the cooling breeze.
Activities are varied - explore the inland area on foot, or venture onto the Lake in a canoe or a traditional sailing dhow; go snorkelling or sailing, try your hand at fishing from a local dug-out canoe; venture out on a bird-watching tour or visit a local village, with the assistance of proud, local guides that are always willing to give an insight into Nyanja life.
They state at the Lodge that ‘no two meals are ever the same’. Dining here can be whenever you want it to be, with the chefs always adding their local ingenuity to create flavourful, wholly local and natural dishes. Enjoy the unique environment as you tuck into these joyful delicacies.
Since The Manda Wilderness Community Trust was set up a few years back, it has managed to take huge strides in providing better, more economical living for the local people. Their vision is to balance community development with conservation through the creation of a sustainable wilderness reserve, and at the same time provide the local people with employment and an alternative income to subsistence farming and fishing. The lodge is best reached from the Malawian Capital, Lilongwe, with a 1 hour flight to Likoma Island where the nearby luxury lodges of Kaya Mawa reside. From there it is a 1½ hour boat transfer across the lake to the lodge.
