The ancient city of Aswan lies on the magnificent River Nile in the south of Egypt and is situated just north of the Aswan Dam on the east bank of the Nile at the first cataract.
It is the gateway for many river cruises, and is a scenic serene stage of the Nile, as it flows through granite rocks, and round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants. There are an impressive number of monuments that line the course of the Nile from Aswan including The Temple of Philae, The Agha Khan Mausoleum and St. Simeon’s Monastery, which are all important sites of historical importance. The city was an important trade port, and today it is still thriving with souks for spices, souvenirs and African handmade goods.
