&Beyond Mnemba is a private tropical island just off the north-east coast of Zanzibar. It is a small island located in a marine conservation area and is dedicated to barefoot luxury and offering the most idyllic setting for a very exclusive holiday.

Although subject to surprising tidal variation, this island certainly has one of the best beaches in East Africa – a stunning white sand beach that rings the whole island. Mnemba is reached by a road transfer of over an hour from Zanzibar Airport followed by a 10-minute hop on a boat to the island. The island itself is set on the edge of a large coral atoll whose reef breaks the waves and protects the island. The breaking surf is on the horizon and the beautiful white sand and incredible blues of the ocean all combine to install a sense of timelessness that is difficult to find today.

The rich and colourful coral reefs surrounding the island are home to a vast variety of marine life, making this a divers and snorkellers paradise. Humpback whales, dolphins, turtles and rays can be seen, along with a variety of predators including barracuda, mackerel, kingfish, sailfish and marlin plus the occasional whale shark. The island itself provides a nesting ground for the endangered green turtle, as well as many bird species, including the rare crab plover. The tiny suni antelope roams the islands forest and the highly endangered Ader’s duiker may also be spotted on a walk around the island.

The ten individual beachside bandas (cottages) nestle amongst the foliage and have been built from natural materials, adding further to the feeling of being at one with the natural rhythm of the island. The bandas are private, extremely spacious and comfortable, and are equipped with a spacious outside relaxation area and a large bedroom styled with soft, natural fabrics and traditional wood carvings, whilst a ceiling fan will cool down the warm tropical nights. A dressing area then leads to a large bathroom with an impressive stone shower behind a glass beaded curtain.

Large pillows and locally made wooden tables provide the setting on your verandah for wonderful views of the white beach as you enjoy refreshing drinks and watch the sun set. Enjoy scrumptious lunches, served on large, wooden carved platters, and later, when the awesome African sky lights up with stars, enjoy a superb dinner served on the beach, with the bright moonlight reflecting off the waves as they gently lap on the beach.

The resorts dedication to the guests individual’s personal needs leave nothing to chance – the inspired dining, the attentive yet relaxed service from your butler and the rest of the resort team, and the standards throughout are supreme. Whilst rest and relaxation are two vital ingredients of a stay at Mnemba you can also participate in a variety of activities should you require. Scuba diving, sport fishing, snorkelling, watersports and strolling on the shore should provide more than enough activity for most, with most activities (including two scuba dives per day) included in the price!

There may be places that are cheaper than Mnemba and where you may even experience greater luxury and more amenities, but few places come close to the privacy, escapism, exclusivity and setting of this stunning retreat.
