AN IDYLLIC GROUP OF ISLANDS THAT DEFINE THE DESERT ISLAND HOLIDAYThe idyllic outlying islands of the Seychelles archipelago, accessed by scheduled flights, helicopter or ferry from Mahé, define the desert island holiday; palms and tropical vegetation, encircled by dazzling beach and fringed by living reef. There is generally only one property per island and a towel, a book, simple water sports and a stroll around the island are about the limit of occupational therapy. Yet a stay on these islands could not be more complete.
The accommodation on all the islands is elegant yet generally understated and the cuisine is excellent and imaginative. Each island and lodge has its own special character but the theme throughout is one of empty beaches, romantic solitude and escapism. Island-hopping is simple, due to the frequent inter-island flights, and is the recommended method of exploring these jewels of the Indian Ocean.
Close by to Praslin is La Digue, the fourth largest island in Seychelles and one of the most scenic with forests, fauna in the form of delicate orchids, tumbling vines of vanilla and rare birdlife. The island of Cousine lies approximately 6km off the west coast of Praslin and offers an exclusive island experience with complete privacy found in very few other places on earth. Cousine was once a coconut plantation but is now home to a superb resort that offers an exceptional experience within a private nature reserve. Bird and Denis Island are far to the north of Mahé, and have extraordinarily rich sea-life in the form of hawksbill and green turtles, dolphins, dugongs and even the occasional whale. The private islands of Frégate and North Island are similar sanctuaries again with, stylish five-star accommodation and designed in keeping with the eco-system.
Of the outer islands, Desroches is 230km south-west of Mahé and the only island in the outer islands group offering accommodation. This coral island measures 5km long and 1.5km wide, boasting 14km of immaculate beaches that fringe a lush grove of coconut palms interspersed by casuarina trees.
