Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa is the first luxury resort in the Maldives south of the equator, the resort offers guests a stylish experience in a spacious, boutique-style environment. Situated on Addu Atoll, the resort encompasses over six km’s of picturesque coastline and nearly two km’s of beautiful white sandy beach. Unlike any other, the three-kilometre-long island features 12 hectares of lush vegetation, 17,000 coconut trees, 3 natural lagoons and nature trails.

The resort is reached by a 70-minute flight from Male followed by a short boat ride from Gan International Airport.

From private ocean retreats to tropical tree houses with panoramic views, accommodation is available in five distinct styles, designed in a serene mood throughout with subtle touches of Middle Eastern and Indian elements. Villas are awash in Sienna brown, vanilla and soothing medium turquoise with stylish use of sun bleached wood to reflect the resort’s surroundings.

One villa style unique to the Maldives is the luxury tree house villa, perched on stilts three metres above the ground offering a special perspective of the surf and lagoons. Water villas connect to the island by a timber walkway, with terraces and outdoor showers extending over the clear ocean water. The pool villas overlook the beach and feature a private pool, terrace and open-air shower. Beach villas have a separate bedroom and living room, these villas are ideal for families and two couples, they are set in a garden, with an infinity pool and sundeck. Two extensive presidential villas – the ultimate in luxury – complete the collection.

CHI, The Spa offers innovative therapies body treatments based on ancient Chinese and Himalayan traditions. This secluded sanctuary is located in its own spa village in the resort, with spacious individual treatment villas offering “spa within a spa” environments. There is also the unique yoga pavilion overlooking the Indian Ocean.

The sensory pleasures of eating and drinking are equally well catered for at the resort. Time and mood are perfectly matched at Khazaanaage by a variety of three living rooms, each representing different cultures and cuisines from the Indian Ocean, South China Sea and Arabian Gulf regions. Javvu’s speciality is refined Western cuisine with a touch of the Mediterranean. For those who seek dining experiences with a difference, the resort will surprise with arrangements from a jungle-themed dinner in the heart of the island’s forest to a cruise on a luxury yacht for lunch on the equator.

There is excellent snorkelling at the resort’s house reef and snorkelling gardens close to the shoreline, more than 25 dive sites teeming with marine life, not to mention the dramatic 140-metre ‘British Loyalty’ shipwreck just a half-hour boat ride away. The resort is ideally located for exploring the neighbouring inhabited islands. Guests can take one of the regular speedboat runs to Gan and then explore by bicycle the five islands connected by a 17-kilometre road.
