GREAT BEACHES & EXCELLENT DIVE SITESVisiting eastern Sri Lanka is travelling as it used to be: tropical lushness, unexplored beaches and scattered jungle ruins that feel way off the beaten track. The main tourist draws are Trincomalee, Passikudah, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay. Trincomalee is located on the northern part of the east coast of the island overlooking the Trincomalee Harbour, which has often been described as the finest harbour in the world. Trincomalee also has some of the most picturesque and scenic beaches found in Sri Lanka. Passikudah is a small coastal village which is famous for its lovely golden bay and wonderful beach and the crystal clear, shallow waters. Batticaloa is about 35km’s south of Passikudah and is home to a historic Dutch Fort and three picturesque lagoons, great beaches and a number of excellent dive sites, including the wreck of the HMS Hermes, a WW2 British naval ship. Arugam Bay is a laid-back hang-out that’s also Sri Lanka’s top surfing spot. The hinterland is full of wildlife, and you’re virtually assured of seeing wild elephants at Ampara.
