WONDERFUL FORTIFIED CITY AND EXCELLENT BEACH RESORTSThe South needs to figure prominently in any traveller’s visit to Sri Lanka. The UNESCO-listed old port town of Galle is situated on the south-western tip of the country and is the 4th largest city in Sri Lanka. The city was fortified by the Dutch in 1649 and has gained international fame as one of the best-preserved examples of colonial life in Asia. The cobbled streets of the 17th-century Fort are lined with old, un-restored buildings that vividly show the influences of the Dutch, Portuguese, British, Muslims and the many other peoples and cultures that have passed through. There are a number of excellent boutique hotels in the old city as well as quality restaurants and bars.
The rest of the south coast is made up of coastal towns and villages that are quickly becoming popular with tourists as beach destinations. The main ones offer an array of bars and restaurants and luxury boutique hotels and larger beach resorts. There are plenty of activities available for those that seek more than lying on a beach or by the pool with watersports, snorkelling and diving the coral reefs, fishing (or just watching the stilted fishermen), day tours to Galle, bird-watching plus you could venture to Yala National Park for a safari.
