SOUTHERN ISLANDS, MOZAMBIQUE – DELUXE
andBeyond Benguerra Island is set amongst lush trees and overlooking the azure waters of the Benguerra Channel. The lodge has been immaculately refurbished and offers the very finest in barefoot luxury, whilst maintaining local traditions.
There are ten casinhas, two cabanas and a private 3 bed family villa – Casa Familia. These are all thatched with light coloured interiors that combine island chic with a distinct African feel and reminders of the area’s Portuguese heritage. The casinhas and cabanas boast elegant four-poster beds with white linen canopies and comfortable day beds. Large windows with dark wooden shutters gaze out towards the Indian Ocean, while private timber decks and cool rim flow pools offer a secluded alternative to beach sands and ocean waters. Bathrooms feature generous tubs big enough for two, while outdoor showers are decorated with hand-painted tiles. A shaded gazebo provides the ideal venue for starlit dinners, while the stylish dining room and open lounge, both of which boast wide, sunny decks, are the setting for more social dining. Ideal for families or groups, the Casa Familia boasts three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, as well as private swimming pool.
The daily experience is dictated by you. You can choose to be active or you may wish just to relax and soak up the sun and the ambience on this island paradise. The dhow bar is the perfect place to head for in the early evening as you take a sundowner and reminisce your day or discuss activities for the next day with the staff. The dining options are as varied as the food, but being an island there is no surprise by the abundance of fresh seafood, and tropical fruit platters. In the evenings you can dine under the stars on the beach, with the sound of the waves lapping the shore or take a picnic during the day out to a secluded spot.
The activities are numerous, some of which are included in the rates per stay, such as a castaway picnic, island expedition and a local community tour. Also free daily activities include, dhow cruise, scheduled snorkeling trip, bird watching and sea kayaking. The swimming is excellent either in the house pool or in the sea. The lodge is on a permanent lagoon, so access to the water is easy as not affected by the tide. It is also part of a protected marine park, so the waters are not overfished and the coral and marine life is spectacular. Chargeable activities include, PADI diving, game fishing and fly-fishing (catch and release), catamaran cruises, horse-riding, scenic helicopter tours and massage treatments in the sala.
