This itinerary is perfect for anyone wanting to explore the highlights of Sri Lanka, with a relaxing end to the holiday in The Maldives. Explore the wildlife and surroundings of Sri Lanka for the first part of your holiday and look forward to a relaxing end in a beautiful beach resort which includes plenty of activities for you to enjoy.

INDIAN OCEAN EXPLORER – 12 NIGHTS / 13 DAYS (excluding international flights)
Day 1 – London Heathrow – Colombo

Depart on the scheduled Sri Lankan Airways flight from London Heathrow to Colombo, flying overnight. Relax and enjoy the flight to Sri Lankan and the in-flight hospitality and entertainment.

Day 2 – Pinnawala – Dambulla

Arrive into Colombo International Airport at 04h45. On arrival you will be met by our local representative who will assist you with your luggage and guide you to your vehicle where cold towels and your personal chauffeur guide await. Transfer to Pinnawala, where on arrival you will proceed on an excursion to visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

The Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist attractions. The orphanages population has now mushroomed to around 65, making it the world’s largest collection of captive elephants. The elephants here range in age from newborns to elderly matriarchs, and include orphaned and abandoned elephants, as well as those injured in the wild.

Continue your journey to Dambulla and check in to Amaya Lake Hotel on a Half Board Basis (breakfast & evening meal). You will have the rest of the day at leisure exploring this lovely property and its surroundings. Dinner and overnight stay at Amaya Lake

Day 3 – Dambulla – Minneriya – Sigiriya – Kandy
After a very early breakfast proceed on an excursion to visit the Minneriya National Park. Enjoy a Jeep Safari in the Minneriya National park. Its centerpiece is the large Minneriya Tank, and the park also boasts an unusually wide range of habitat types, from dry tropical forest to wetlands, grasslands and terrain previously used for slash-and-burn agriculture. For most visitors, the principal attraction here is elephants. Minneriya forms part of the elephant corridor which joins up with Kaudulla and Wasgomuwa National Parks, and up to 200 elephants can be found here at certain times of year during their migrations between the various parks. Other mammals found in the park include sambur, spotted deer, sloth bears and leopards, and there’s also a good chance of seeing macaque and purple-faced languor monkeys. In addition, an enormous number of birds have been
spotted at Minneriya, including endemic species such as the Sri Lankan hanging parrot and the crimson
fronted barbet.

Continue your journey to Sigiriya and visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.Climb the 5th century Sigiriya Rock Fortress which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by King Kashyapa(477-495). Dinner and overnight stay at Amaya Hills.

Day 4 – Kandy Sightseeing – Nuwara Eliya

After an early breakfast proceed on a city tour of Kandy. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Kandy which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The historic city about 480m above sea level surrounded by mountains was known to Sri Lankan as Kanda Uda Rata, which means the hill country. Kandy was home to Sri Lanka’s last independent Kingdom, which survived two centuries of colonial incursion before finally falling to the British at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Visit the Temple of the tooth, the royal Botanical Gardens, the Peradeniya University campus and catch a panoramic view of the picturesque town from Upper lake Drive.

Continue your journey to Nuwara Eliya and check in to Grand Hotel on aHalf Board Basis. (breakfast &
evening meal) You will have the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight stay at Grand Hotel.

Day 5 – Nuwara Eliya – Colombo

After breakfast proceed on a city tour of Nuwara Eliya. Nuwara Eliya, meaning “the city of dawn” is the town at the highest elevation (about 2000m above sea level) in Sri Lanka and its tallest peak, Piduruthalagala (2555m) could be seen from here. About 1.5km away is Seeth Amman Temple, said to be built at the spot where Ravna held Sita captive, as related in the Ramayana. The small temple has a collection of statues, including a couple of Kali images.

Continue your journey and check in to Ceylon Continental Hotel on a Half Board Basis. (Breakfast & evening meal). Early evening proceed on a city tour of Colombo or remain relaxing in the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at Ceylon Continental Hotel.

Day 6 – Colombo – Maldives
After an early breakfast transfer to Colombo Airport where you will then proceed to the Sri-Lankan Airlines desk to check-in for the flight to Male, in the Maldives.

On arrival in Male you will be met and transferred by seaplane to Medhufushi Island Resort for 7 nights in a Beach Villa on a Half Board basis. (Breakfast & evening meal)

On arrival at your resort you will be checked in to your room and then spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing.

Medhufushi Island Resort is located in the Southern part of the Maldives on the unspoilt and tranquil atoll of Meemu, just 130km from Male International Airport. Maldivian owned, this small and intimately designed 5-star resort is located in a crystal clear lagoon and allows clients to indulge themselves in authentic traditional Maldivian culture, perfect for those seeking privacy and the utmost in luxury.

Lazy days are spent soaking up the sun on the pristine powder sand beaches or at the infinity edge freshwater pool where an attendant is on hand to assist with your every need. For the water sport enthusiast there is a fully equipped water sports centre offering a wide range of activities along with a qualified dive school providing an extensive array of programmes with courses catering for all levels.

Days 7 to 12 – The Maldives

Days in resort can be spent soaking up the sun either by the poolside or on the beautiful beach which surrounds the resort. For the ultimate in relaxation why not indulge and treat yourself to a spot of pampering with a spa treatment or two! For those wanting a little more activity there is a wide variety of water based activities on offer including windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing & sailing through to the more adventurous kite surfing and wake boarding. The beautiful crystal blue waters of the Maldives make snorkelling an absolute must and you will be amazed at the colourful and beautiful tropical marine life just a few feet from the shore. You could also try your hand at diving, with Medhufushi having a qualified dive school on site that can provide an extensive array of programmes with courses catering for all levels.

For those wanting to catch a glimpse of traditional island life in the Maldives, take an excursion to a local island or why not experience traditional Maldivian reel fishing and have your fresh catch served for dinner upon your return to the resort. You may even be lucky enough to catch sight of a school of Dolphins whilst out at sea.

Day 13 – The Maldives – London

After a leisurely morning and afternoon you will be transferred back to Male International via seaplane, where you will then be taken to the international Airport to check-in for the return overnight flight back to London. Please note the return flight will transfer via Colombo, arriving in London the next day.
