HOTEL NAME: Giraffee Manor

Giraffe Manor is Nairobi’s most iconic historical building, dating back to the 1930s, and is reminiscent of the early days of Europeans in East Africa. Whilst the building itself resonates with the past, very much present is the herd of eleven resident Rothschild giraffe who tend to visit the Manor in the mornings and evenings to greet guests and sniff out some snacks before venturing out into their sanctuary of 140 acres. From 1974, Giraffe Manor was the home of Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, whose lifelong ambition became the preservation of this beautiful and threatened species of giraffe.

With just 10 rooms, which includes three double rooms, Giraffe Manor is an exclusive boutique hotel catering for the discerning traveller to Nairobi. Attentive, experienced managers cater for every guest’s need, arranging sightseeing vehicles for forays around Nairobi or special excursions to find Jock, the big old male giraffe that is responsible for many Rothschild Giraffe offspring! Giraffe Manor interiors are stylish, yet in keeping with its original design that was so influenced by the fever of the day. An original Art Deco bathroom is a feature of the house that never fails to amaze. To find all this in the suburbs of an African city makes it all the more captivating.

Located in the suburbs of Nairobi in a unique area of preserved wilderness, Giraffe Manor offers an exceptional and unique experience, and an elegant retreat from the excitement of the capital city.

Giraffe Manor is also home to many characters including warthogs, bushbuck, dik dik and more than 180 species of birds and has a striking view of the Ngong hills.

Nairobi is a hub for dynamic and innovative artists, journalists, entrepreneurs and business people, and the city is constantly changing. Whilst many travellers stay just one night in Nairobi, a two night stay will leave the traveller with a true taste of one of Africa’s most vibrant cities.

Activities on offer include visits to the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre (which was set up by African Fund for Endangered Wildlife as a breeding centre for the endangered Rothschild Giraffe), and the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, that rescues and rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants and rhinos. Visitors to the orphanage can watch feeding and bath times each morning within the grounds of the orphanage and enjoy watching the calves playing with footballs and chasing each other. When the calves are strong enough, they are gradually introduced to Tsavo National Park to the David Sheldrick elephant sanctuary.

The hotel can also arrange trips to the Kenyan National Museum, the local Maasai Market, designer shops like the Anna Trezbinski and Penny Winter studios that are very close to Giraffe Manor, the Nairobi National Park and the Bomas of Kenya, which gives you a great insight on the culture, history and lifestyle of Kenya’s many tribal groups.
