The awe-inspiring Victoria Falls are known locally as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” which translates as the “Smoke that Thunders” and this is fitting for the Zambezi River dramatically plunges some 120 metres, at a rate of 550 million litres every minute, into a vast gorge creating a spray that rises over 500 metres into the sky. The spray can be seen 20 miles away. The Falls form a natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and can be enjoyed from both countries. Victoria Falls is a must see and should be on everyone’s “bucket list”! The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park nearby is small by Zambian standards but is home to most of Zambia’s more common wild animals. The area is fast becoming one of the adventure sports capitals on the planet and is attracting more and more visitors from all over the globe each year. Activities include bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge spanning the deep Batoka Gorge, river rafting, kayaking or river boarding down the wild Zambezi, abseiling down a sheer rock face overlooking the spectacular surroundings of the Bakota Gorge, swinging across the Bakota Gorge like a bird in flight on the world’s first commercial high wire, taking a helicopter flight over the falls, riding on the back of an elephant, horse riding through the teak forests, or having an up-close and personal encounter with lion or cheetah.
