SOUTH LUANGWA – DELUXE
The South Luangwa National Park is a place of primeval forest and lush savanna, stretching for hundreds of miles and encompassing the Luangwa River basin, its adjacent highlands and a mosaic of different habitats extending outwards from the central river. Chichele occupies one of the most breathtaking sites in the entire Park. Due to its magnificent hilltop site, Chichele was formerly a private Presidential retreat and the lodge and bedrooms exploit the wonderful floodplain vistas offered by the site.
The lodge has 10 elegant air-conditioned Victorian-style rooms, with private terraces, have four-poster beds adorned with crisp linen, cushions and set a wonderful ambience of gentility. A sumptuous bathroom with twin basins, ball and claw bathtub and separate shower would have been a charming surprise for those early colonial visitors but today is a must for the modern visitor.
The colonial main hall and dining room add an air of splendour to the Lodge. A grand piano and antique gramophone grace the room along with carefully collected furniture and eclectic bric a brac. Exotically carved lamps and touches of leather remind the visitor that Africa is at hand. Immaculate lawns dotted with umbrellas surround the formal pool and deep shady verandas provide a welcome retreat during the heat of the day.
Meals are superb with a wide selection of dishes, and the venues vary from the stylish dining room to the scenic verandahs and around the fire.
Luangwa is home to significant populations of game and the Luangwa River is home to more Nile crocodiles than any other river in Africa. Four hundred bird species are found in the Park, which is also famous for its lion and leopard populations. Game viewing is therefore excellent and is complemented by the dramatic scenery.
