SELOUS, TANZANIA – DELUXE
Sand Rivers is a stunning safari lodge overlooking the Rufiji on a wide stretch of the river. The lodge is in the northern section of The Selous, an area untouched by commercial tourism. It was while leading a portered walking safari through this part of the world in the 80’s that Richard Bonham stumbled upon this particular bend of the Rufiji River. Straightaway he knew he’d found somewhere special.
There are 8 stone & thatch cottages which align the river, with 5 Riverside Rooms and 3 Hillside Suites. Each has an en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers, whilst the Suites have the addition of a large living space and a small plunge pool.
The central bar and main mess area is open-fronted, making the most of the breathtaking river views. The river is full of activity during the day and at night, with hippo, crocodile, monitor lizards and an abundant birdlife collection.
Safari activities are tailored to suit each guest, whether it is 4×4 game drives, walking safaris, fishing, boating, or a combination of all of these. It is one of few safari lodges with such a wide safari offering, which means you can mix up your daily experience, including the opportunity to spend a night out fly camping, which is best arranged in advance and is at an additional cost. This is a unique opportunity to camp out under mosquito nets and spend a night out in the bush and is well recommended to get a real taste and feel of Africa.
