RUAHA, TANZANIA – DELUXE
The 4,000 square mile Ruaha National Park sprawls within the Great Rift Valley and was once regarded as an ‘exile’ posting for (unwanted) Park Wardens, as it did not carry the same accolades as the northern parks. It offers a very different safari to Northern Tanzania – it is relatively remote, does not attract the vast numbers of visitors that you find in the north and the resident wildlife is also completely different to that in the north – large numbers of greater kudu as well as lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope; healthy packs of African wild dog; large herds of buffalo and elephant found along the banks of the Ruaha and Mwagusi; lion prides that can number up to twenty; plus there are more than five hundred species of birds in the park with new species still being recorded – an indication of how wild Ruaha still is.
Jongomero Camp stands under large acacias on the banks of the Jongomero Sand River in the remote south-west corner of the park and is surrounded by a wilderness of ‘terminalia’ woodland. The eight subtly elegant canvas rooms are built on polished hardwood decks and shaded by thatch. There are large windows, cool verandahs overlooking the river and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets, twin basins and huge showers.
The dining and living areas are both original and very comfortable with cool, neutral tones housed under a soaring thatch roof with the bar and dining area shaded by large riverine trees. An inviting natural rock pool is a wonderful spot for relaxation.
Activities at Jongomero include morning and evening game drives, bush walks and full day expeditions to the remoter reaches of the park. On these longer safari trips delectable picnic breakfasts and lunches are usually arranged at pre-selected sites, often under acacia or magnificent baobab trees overlooking the mighty Ruaha River. Walking safaris and overnight trips with lightweight mobile camps can also be arranged but must be pre-booked.
