NGORONGORO CRATER, TANZANIA – PRESTIGE
This multi-award-winning andBeyond property is a wonderland, both inside and out. The lodge is perched on the lip of the stunning Ngorongoro Crater with quite spectacular views – the early morning mists drift away to reveal one of the greatest views on earth, whilst sunsets are also something to behold! The lodge, with its huge stilted timber and thatch suites, blends appropriately with the incredible setting while the interior is rich theatre.
The décor has been described as “Bush Baroque” or “Maasai meets Versailles”, bringing together warm earthy colours and African artefacts, silks and Persian rugs and even locally handmade chandeliers. It is an opulent stage, set as if some great and eccentric colonial traveller has unpacked his trunks and set up home. The appeal lies in the detail and sheer extravagance of the style, which is certainly exciting but still manages to retain a sense of depth of Africa. It is certainly subordinate to the wonderland beyond the balconies.
A total of 30 private cottages are set across three intimate camps in the grounds overlooking the Crater. Two of the camps house 12 suites, whilst one has only 6 suites. In the suites a huge bed sits beneath a thatched, domed ceiling, big chunks of dark wood and rich fabrics set the tone. The en-suite bathroom features a chandelier, a large shower and a free-standing bath on a wooden floor. The views from the balcony are out across the Crater.
The central area, with the spectacular domed dining room, is also adorned with impressive features and each evening dinner is turned into an event worthy of celebrating any special occasion.
Activities obviously focus on trips to the Crater floor but bush walks and birding safaris around the lodge and excursions to Olduvai Gorge, ‘the cradle of mankind’, are also available.
