Arusha is in northern Tanzania and is surrounded by some of Africa’s most famous landscapes and national parks. The town is situated below Mount Meru with spectacular views over Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro. The city is the starting point of safaris of the “northern circuit” of Tanzania, being close to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge.
Mount Meru is located 40 miles west of Mount Kilimanjaro and stands at a height of 4,565 metres (14,977 ft), making it the 10th highest mountain in Africa. It sits in the centre of Arusha National Park with its fertile slopes supporting a rich forest that is home to a diverse range of wildlife and birdlife.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcanic mountain and is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, reaching a height of 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet. It is very popular with climbers and trekkers and there are 7 official routes by which to ascend and descend Mount Kilimanjaro. Machame is probably the most popular for serious climbers and is definitely the most scenic, although it is quite a steep climb and generally takes 5-7 days. The Rongai is the easiest and least scenic climb, whilst the the Marangu is also relatively easy, but this route tends to be very busy and the ascent and descent follows the same route.
