KATAVI, TANZANIA – DELUXE
One of only two camps in the vast 5,000 sq km wilderness of Katavi National Park, Chada Katavi Tented Camp is as ‘at-one’ as you can possibly get with Africa. This really is a Park for the wildlife and it is easy to imagine that the region has remained unchanged since time began. In Katavi you will find rivers, wetlands and plains plus all the associated game.
The camp is pitched at the edge of wetlands where hippo, crocodile, buffalo and elephant all compete for space. The style of the camp is that of a traditional safari camp with campaign furniture, it is a very small and intense camp. There are only six tents here with private bathrooms having “safari loos” and bucket showers. The style is simple but definitely comfortable with wide open fronts to display panoramic views of the plains and wildlife out on the park.
Combined with the wild environment and rich game of the region, a stay at Chada Katavi is surely the experience the first safari expeditions sought. Days are spent “bush-whacking”, on foot or in open vehicles. To complete the true safari experience head off into the bush and camp out under the stars, on a camp bed beneath a fly sheet hung from a fig tree. Dinner is in the mess tent or alfresco, accompanied by fine wines and candlelight. The experience could not be more complete.
Katavi is said to have the highest biomass of wildlife (literally meat per acre) of any park in Africa. In addition to the buffalo, hippo, elephant and crocodiles, there are vast quantities of topi, giraffe, hartebeest, sable, roan, waterbuck and reedbuck and large populations of predators – lion, hyena and leopard (as you’d expect when you see the buffalo). For some extraordinary reason the area also seems to hold vast quantities of mice, especially around the edge of Chada flood plain. The 400 plus species of birds reflect an intriguing balance between east and southern African species.
Katavi is known for its unbelievable game, you can enjoy this through different activities the camp offers. For example, large game drives on open 4X4 vehicles, fly camping, walking safaris and more. These are all enforced to help boast your experience and the wildlife you will be viewing.
