MARAKELE NATIONAL PARK, LIMPOPO PROVINCE – DELUXE
Within a dramatic landscape encompassing vast plains, dense bushveld, winding rivers, deep gorges and majestic mountains, Marataba is an exclusive 23,000 hectare private concession in the heart of Limpopo’s Marakele National Park, a place of sanctuary for Africa’s ‘Big Five’ and a multitude of other animal species, including rare antelope such as roan, sable and mountain reedbuck. This malaria-free wilderness is also home to the world’s largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Vulture, whilst other birdlife within the park is prolific with more than 400 species having been recorded, a veritable birder’s Eden.
Marataba Safari Lodge is evocative of ancient African remains with stone-masonry characterising the main lodge with huge expanses of glass taking full advantage of the spectacular panoramic scenery. Admire the view while enjoying a cocktail in the Ladies Bar or simply relax in The Wallow with a book from the library, housed within the stone tower with a birds-eye view of the breathtaking surroundings. As temperatures rise in Limpopo, guests can cool off in the crystal clear pool.
The air-conditioned tented suites are an intriguing mix of canvas, timber and stone and exquisitely furnished and decorated. The en-suite stone bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers and a bath, as well as his and hers basins and a dressing room and are the epitome of bushveld opulence. The 15 suites each have their own private deck overlooking the sweeping plains and meandering river below.
Exhilarating games drives in open vehicles and fascinating bush walks are wonderful ways to enhance the appetite in anticipation of gourmet cuisine with fresh African flavours served either in the elegantly appointed dining room, outdoors on the dining verandah or under a glorious African sky.
Marataba Walking Trails will open in January 2015 and will be an extension of the natural environment in which it resides. The new lodge will be built ‘of the earth’ around sound ecological methods and principles and will feature 5 luxurious suites with either a king sized bed or twin beds, a private shaded viewing deck, a fireplace and an en-suite bathroom with a rain dance shower (with a view!)
This will appeal to those seeking a “Digital Detox”, wanting to disconnect from normal civilisation! There will be no WiFi or mobile phone signal, with solar power used to power selected items such as cameras to ensure you can capture the important images. The lodge will be completely remote, promising authentic exclusivity where you are at one with nature. The trails will be two or three night departures and will provide the intrepid explorer with an incomparable walking safari, without compromising on important creature comforts.
