OLARE OROK CONSERVANCY, MASAI MARA – PRESTIGE
Mara Plains is a small, personalised camp located within the private 30,000 acre Olare Orok Conservancy, and within meters of the northern boundary of the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is the only camp that can traverse the Masai Mara National Reserve as well as both of the neighbouring conservancies, namely the Olare Orok and the 70,000 acre Mara North Conservancy.
At Mara Plains you will avoid the crowds and mini-buses while still enjoying fabulous wildlife viewing. And even rarer still, you can opt for walking and night drives, a luxury of being on a private conservancy. The camp’s three Landcruisers are specially designed with open sides and high canvas roofs giving the best possible combination of comfort and viewing.
These two conservancies have changed the relationship between the Maasai communities and Kenya’s famous wildlife. Now, for the first time, over 1,000 Maasai families earn guaranteed monthly income from conservation tourism in exchange for converting their lands into sustainable wildlife conservancies.
Mara Plains’ seven canvas suites are built on raised decks and enjoy superb views of the surrounding plains and riverine forest. Each tented suite has its own en-suite bathroom (with a romantic copper bath) and spacious veranda.
The camp revolves around open-air marquis tents that are raised on decking and connected together in a pod style. There are two lounges – one housing a small library and writing area, and a main dining room, with a large impressive dining table and a magnificent chandelier, where guests enjoy breakfast and some dinners as most are served al fresco under the stars.
Mara Plains is part of the Great Plains group who also have Ol Donyo Lodge in Kenya.
