DRAMATIC LANDSCAPES, CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND GREAT GAME VIEWINGLaikipia covers a vast 9,500 sq km plateau in central Kenya, north of the Aberdares and stretching from the slopes of Mount Kenya in the south east to the edge of the Great Rift Valley in the west. The striking escarpments descend into the surrounding arid land with arms of the Ewaso Nyiro River cutting across the vast open plains. The habitats range from dry savannah and open woodlands to spectacular canyons and low forested valleys.
North of Mount Kenya and the Laikipia region, is the Samburu eco-system of Buffalo Springs Reserve, Samburu National Reserve, Shaba National Reserve, Kalama Conservancy, West Gate Community Area and Nakupurat- Gotu Conservancy. The area is characterised by a dramatic landscape of semi-arid desert, divided by the meandering Ewaso Nyiro River and dotted with lush springs, Doum palms, volcanic rocks and sacred mountains. There are a number of rare species that have adapted to the arid environment, such as Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa Oryx and Somali Ostrich, that mingle with the big cats and enormous herds of elephants.
