AMBOSELI & CHYULU DELUXE

Nestled in a verdant acacia grove at the foot of the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tortilis Camp is located just outside Kenya’s Amboseli National Park on 30,000 acres of private conservation and offers unrivaled views over the Kenyan plains, aptly named after the flat-topped tree Acacia Tortilis. This is an area renowned for its diversity of wildlife including elephants, lions, hyena and cheetah.

Accommodation consists of 16 spacious tents raised on wooden decks with large verandas that are sheltered by a makuti (thatched) roof. The tents have either private views over the bush or out towards Kilimanjaro. All feature modern en-suite bathrooms and showers and either a king-size bed or twin beds. Tortilis Camp’s new Family Tent has outstanding views of Mt Kilimanjaro, enjoyed from the comfort of the private family verandah and is another great addition to this child-friendly safari camp in Amboseli. The Family Tent consists of one double en suite bedroom and one twin en suite bedroom.

The resident guides know this area intimately even knowing the individual elephants and their family histories. More than half of the guides are local Masai, and have between them 80 years of guiding and are all Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified.

Tortilis Camp has open game drive vehicles and was the first camp to use open vehicles in a National Park. The current fleet are new, specially fitted, 4×4 Toyota Landcruisers. The vehicles are unrivalled with feature enhancements specifically designed for comfort and photography – open sided with 3 rows of seats, photographic equipment stands, and charging sockets. As with most other camps clients will share game drives unless “exclusive use of vehicle” has been pre booked at an additional charge. With only 10% of Amboseli National Park utilized by most safari vehicles, combined with Tortilis Camp’s unique location on the western edge of the park (most lodges are outside of the eastern gate of the park), guests can enjoy an almost private Amboseli safari whilst at Tortilis as well as enjoying game drives on their own 30,000 acre Kitirua Conservancy, which is the western part of the Amboseli ecosystem.

The lodge is known for its excellent sightings of Amboseli’s famous African Elephant population. Guided bush walks are also available – a unique experience as The Maasai graciously share their ancient knowledge and traditions with guests on the walks and village visits.

Tortilis is known for the excellence of its cuisine, particularly North Italian traditional recipes from the owner’s family cookbook, complimented by delicious salads and herbs grown in the camp’s own garden. Particularly popular is the bush breakfast that is straight “Out of Africa”! The spacious dining room has spectacular views overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro.

Strongly committed to the environment and its surrounding local community, the camp is a former winner of the British Airways award for eco-tourism: the lodge employs over 80% of its staff from the community and contributes to conservation by actively doing its bit to preserve the extended Amboseli area.

The lodge is reached by daily scheduled flights from Nairobi or a three-and-a-half-hour road transfer from the Kenyan capital.
