The camp, named after the famed 19th Century explorer and artist Thomas Baines, is located on the lush and scenic Boro River, in a 260,000 acre private concession bordering the southern section of the famous Moremi Game Reserve, in a seasonal section of the Okavango Delta.

His inspiration is evident when looking at the waterscapes that lie beyond the lodge. Wooden decks offer expansive views over the permanent water of the Boro River and a lagoon teeming with life.

The living area is built on raised wooden decking around a large termite mound and overlooks a perennial lagoon, where hippos can often be seen wallowing (and also heard snorting!). There is also a lovely infinity pool, perfect for cooling off, comfortable sunbeds and a couple of salas that are an ideal escape from the midday sun.

Baines’ is a particularly relaxed camp and has just five expansive suites with thatched roofs and ‘solid’ walls made from recycled tin cans and plaster containing elephant-dung – unusual but very eco-friendly and the finish is extremely effective.

The bedrooms feature four-poster “star beds” which, for a magical night-time experience, can be rolled onto your private deck giving the choice of slumbering under star-laden skies. Baines’ affords superb game viewing and birding.

There are open-sided 4×4 vehicles that can be used on land or motorised boats and mokoro (dug out canoes) which can also be used depending on seasonal water levels. There are also excellent walking safaris. The flood waters arrive in June, though there is often navigable water all year round due to the presence of the Boro River.

There is also a unique and educational elephant interaction programme that is available at an additional cost. Spend time with semi-habituated elephants as they go about their daily routine, walking, feeding and drinking in the Delta.
